Solace in the God Who Declares the End from the Beginning

Remember this and stand firm,
….recall to mind, you transgressors,
Remember the former things of old;
….for I am God, and there is no other;
….I am God, and there is none like me,
Declaring the end from the beginning
….and from ancient times things not yet done,
Saying, “My counsel shall stand,
….and I will accomplish all my purpose” (Is. 46:8-10)

For the most part, I am a man of few doubts when it comes to my faith in God in Christ. Intellectually, by no merit of my own, I waver little in my assent that Yahweh is the one true God–One and existing in three Persons–the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. In spite of my typical surety with regards to faith, the other night, while I was (not for personal pleasure, mind you) reading up on some philosophy and arguments against the existence of God, I, for a moment, genuinely thought to myself, “What if these philosophers are right? What if there really isn’t a God? Or what if they are wrong, and there is a God, but I am worshiping a false one?” For a brief moment, I was caught in my own speculative despair and doubted the God of the Bible.

But as quickly as the doubts and despair came, they vanished when the Spirit placed upon my heart the balm of God’s Word. Brought to my mind was the passage from Isaiah where the Lord declares, “I am God, and there is none like me, declaring the end from the beginning” (v. 46:9b, 10a). Upon that, Psalm 22 was brought to my mind, where the Psalmist foretells in remarkable detail the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, writing hundreds of years before crucifixion was invented, “For dogs encompass me; a company of evildoers encircles me; they have pierced my hands and feet–I can count all my bones–they stare and gloat over me; they divide my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots (Ps. 22:16-18; cf. Mt. 27:35). And then a host of other passages were brought to my mind by the Spirit, all of which declare that Yahweh is the God who declares the end from the beginning.

What does this say except that there is no God like Yahweh, for only the true God can declare the end from beginning, for he is the only One who has the power to bring it about. Allah cannot do this, neither can Brahma, nor can philosophy or evolution or any other god or wisdom. These idols or thoughts attempt to explain the Universe, et al. but they can only exist in the past and the present. Only Yahweh is the Alpha and Omega–the Beginning and the End–the One who is and who was and who is to come–the Almighty (cf. Rev. 1:8; 21:6). We can rest assured in him and know that we shall in no wise be put to shame.

  1. Thanks for this refreshing post. The Spirit's consolation is what brings me through those sort of doubts.

  2. By the way, I happened to think of you and a few others from my SEBTS days when our Sunday school decided to dive into the topic of election. I laughed (out loud) at the man who said "Those Calvinists don't even believe in witnessing to others." It actually sort of made my day when I was able to respond to that!

  3. LOL. You gotta love 'em.
